The Thursday Letters web page hopes Ultimate Fantasy 17 could be a bit extra whimsical, as one reader suggests avoiding Ghostwire: Tokyo.

GC is right to say how bad PS Plus Premium is for retro games. The situation is absolutely ridiculous and I would love to hear from anyone who endorses and is happy with the situation because I can’t believe there are many.
The almost complete absence of PlayStation 1 and 2 games, or PSP, is bizarre and even if they do exist, most of them are obscure games that no one knows or cares about. I think Siphon Filter games must be half of the lineup by now and yet they haven’t done them all yet (and I don’t think anyone cares).
You know things are bad when Nintendo has a better retro situation than Sony, but the PlayStation isn’t even in the game and nothing has changed for a year. I don’t understand and I certainly don’t pay for it. The strangest part is that PS Plus Extra, which I do pay for, is actually quite good. So what gives?

Correct fantasy
I have no idea if Final Fantasy 16 is going to be a hit or not, but I do know it’s not at all what I’m looking for in a game from the series. None of them really have been since 12.
If Square Enix is in trouble right now, I hope they go back to a true fantasy setting with no sci-fi, no Game Of Thrones edginess, and no boy band main characters. Do something fun and healthy. It might have some grit too, but for me Final Fantasy used to be a way to lose yourself in a fantasy world that you enjoy visiting in real life, but I can’t say that’s been the case for any of the modern ones.
I think the series doesn’t really have much of an identity, if you get into it, because it could be just about anything. But to me it should be the definitive Japanese role-playing game and that’s not the vibe I get from 16 or any of the modern games.

Cowardly secrecy
I don’t understand why publishers let games sell so early now. This never happened when stores were much more important and publishers couldn’t push them, but now that the digital world has taken over, suddenly publishers can’t get them in line? Surely all they have to do is threaten the chain by not getting the next game on time and they would quickly take it out.
It’s not like this is a one time event, this happens every time with every big name game. Personally, I like to avoid spoilers, but since everyone knows what’s happening well in advance, that becomes difficult.
These companies go after YouTubers and Twitter accounts for the smallest things and then they let things like this happen or give away really important things in job postings. It seems really weird and inconsistent.

It’s just the flu
RE: Zombie kicker. I’m sure you were joking, I’ll draw it out for you. People want a cure for a disease/virus so they can live. As for the infected. They are infected with a virus/infection that can lie dormant for years until disturbed, which would start everything up again, so the advantage of being immune to reinfection should be obvious.
The actual pitfall is the fact that spores not only hang in the air, but stick to clothing to be inhaled at each stage. If they wanted a more grounded realistic look, a steam shower and new clothes every time they went out would be required, but that would be annoying to watch and so left out.

The two Rs
I wrote about Metroid Prime a while back and still love it.
Honestly impressed with Resident Evil 4, but not as impressed as with Metroid.
For an arbitrary guess, I think the Wii version of Resident Evil 4 is probably the definitive one. But I liked it mostly because of the fast aiming and firing.
Honestly, I think I might be losing a little passion for remasters. Many of the ‘big’ releases are things I played years ago, and still have the original, and have already clocked.
Remasters are all well and good, but I think if you’ve already beaten the game and know the story, remasters are pretty unnecessary.
And
GC: It’s not a remaster, it’s a remake that changes quite a bit.
Leon to Samus
So I played the Resident Evil 4 Chainsaw demo and… I’m not sure?
It looks great, the graphics are really really good, but I think it has lost the charm of the original. I’m also not thrilled with some of the character redesigns, Salazar just looks ridiculous. Leon and Ashley are fine I think, Krauser doesn’t look so menacing…. no, I definitely prefer the original designs.
The controls are okay too I think, they’ve done a few different ones and even one that mimics the original, but to me it just didn’t feel as good to play as the original.
I’m sure it’s going to be a great game, there’s obviously a lot of passion in it, but after playing the demo I feel like the original is still the best way to play it.
Maybe I’ve been spoiled by Metroid Prime Remastered which made me giddy with excitement at the title screen and after just 10 minutes of playing I knew it was the best version of that game; the controls were better, it looked like the original, but better, everything was improved.
I understand that the Resident Evil 4 remake is different because it tries to modernize it for a new audience and for fans of the original. I’m sure I’ll get it eventually, but I think even after I’ve played it… the original will still be the best.

Empty library
I was just checking my PlayStation 4 library and for the life of me I can’t find the games I bought on my PlayStation 3. Is there a border point? I had Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 9 and Parasite Eve 2. Maybe one for the underboxers?
I also sold my PlayStation 3 so I can’t just go back on that.

Character arc
So The Last Of Us is the latest beloved HBO show! Everybody loves it! It is based on an existing story that exists in a different media format!
Does this sound familiar? It should do. Game of Thrones, based on GRR Martin’s unfinished epic A Song Of Ice And Fire, was just as early received, I think.
And that got me thinking about the endings. (Which in the case of Game Of Thrones may or may not differ from the books, Mr. Martin seems in no hurry to close that particular story, not when he can write a backstory for Elden Ring and the like, but that’s another subject .)
Now I’m pretty sure most of us reading these pages know how The Last Of Us ends, we know Ellie’s journey and, assuming the TV show sticks to this, how will those who aren’t in the know of the storyline?
Again, I think of Game of Thrones and the love that show, and Daenerys Targaryen in particular, got (I once met someone who named their daughter Khaleesi, poor boy). Until it didn’t. In that case, the signposts (at least in the books) were always there, that Dani would turn into a murderous dictator. She was a Targaryen, it’s kind of their thing, so it always ended badly; Can’t say I was surprised.
But everyone was somehow? The change of opinion about how good the show was, from fans and media, was pretty crazy! (Admittedly, that was partly because they ran out of source material for the past two or three seasons.)
Anyway, this is about The Last Of Us, not Game of Thrones, and I wonder how fans of the TV show, who’ve never played the video game, will react to what’s to come. Will we see a change of views? Will fans accept what Ellie becomes and what she does? Or will we see a backlash due to a character following their canonical storyline?
Sure, the creators could save it and give us a long and happy life, but that would be nonsense, wouldn’t it?
Anyway, it’s going to be interesting!
The Guy stays
GC: You’re talking about seasons 2 and 3, which cover the events of The Last Of Us Part 2, right? The way you wrote it makes it seem like you mean the Season 1 finale.
Inbox is also running
Watched my son play Sea of Thieves and started thinking what I would really like a Monkey Island section in the game with all the original characters and puzzles from the Lucas art classics of yesteryear. Inbox Magic makes it so!
Johnny Alpha SD
Currently playing: Sleeping Dogs and Portal 2
GC: It does not contain any puzzles, but there is an entire Monkey Island section in the game.
As a fan of The Evil Within, who gave Ghostwire: Tokyo a try because it was by the same people, I’d strongly suggest not doing the same. It is extremely boring and repetitive. Worst game I’ve bought in a long time.

Hot topic this week
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Korey, who asks what’s the longest you haven’t played video games on a regular basis?
Maybe you’re a lapsed gamer and lost interest for a while, but if that’s the case, what pushed you away and what attracted you back? Or maybe it was just a money issue or something related to work that kept you from playing?
Do you consider gaming an important part of your life or is it just something you pay attention to when a certain game grabs you? When you became interested in games later in life, what did you eventually notice?
