Over the past few years, the best-selling author has shut the horns with people on social media and been denounced by most of the Harry Potter cast after being accused of transphobia, which she has denied.
In 2020, 57-year-old Rowling gave her opinion on an article that referred to “people who menstruate,” questioning why the term “women” was not used.
Her comments sparked a wave of backlash, with many calling the writer transphobic and explaining that not only cis-gender women menstruate.
Many who were once fans of Rowling’s work have now distanced themselves from the author, but she has now revealed that her legacy is of no concern to her.
“It was never my intention to upset anyone. However, I didn’t feel uncomfortable stepping off my pedestal,” she said in an episode of the new podcast The Witch Trials of JK Rowling.
She continued, “And what has interested me for the last 10 years and certainly in the last few years especially on social media “You ruined your legacy oh you could have been loved forever but you chose to say this” and I think you could not have understood me more deeply.
“I don’t walk around my house thinking about my legacy, what a pompous way to live your life thinking about what my legacy will be. Whatever. I’ll be dead. I care now. I care about the living.’
In another episode, Rowling — who also writes under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith — spoke to author, activist, and podcast host Megan Phelps-Roper about the “obvious presence” of good and evil in the Harry Potter series.
Rowling defined, ‘That is such a deep query and it goes to the guts of Potter and it goes to the guts of a giant a part of my worldview.
“There’s an enormous pull, and I am making an attempt to indicate that within the Potter books, of considering in black and white. It’s the best place to be and in some ways the most secure place to be. If you happen to take an all-or-nothing stance on one thing, you’ll certainly discover comrades, you’ll simply discover a group – “I’ve sworn allegiance to this one easy thought”.
‘What I’ve tried to indicate within the Potter books, and what I really feel very strongly myself, we should always most mistrust ourselves once we are sure. And we now have to query ourselves essentially the most once we get an adrenaline rush from doing or saying one thing.
“Many individuals confuse that adrenaline rush with the voice of conscience. In my worldview, conscience speaks in a really small and uncomfortable voice, and it usually says to you, ‘Assume once more, look deeper, contemplate this.’
In latest months, Rowling has been supported by her celeb pals, together with Succession actor Brian Cox, who stated the author “is entitled to her opinion,” whereas actor Stephen Fry maintained his friendship with the creator.
