Now the singer has apologized after being touched by a response to a post in which he joked that he had undergone gender-confirming surgery.
This week, Nas—real name Montero Lamar Hill—shared a photo on Twitter of a woman who looked just like him with the caption, “THE SURGERY WAS A SUCCESS.”
He was immediately criticized for appearing to mock the trans community, transition and surgery, and was accused by some of being transphobic.
At first, Nas hit back, responding to a critic with, “I’m literally just saying she looks like me, you guys can’t be serious.”
And in response to another who asked “why did he have to talk about surgery,” he replied, “Because she has tits?” are you fat? (sic).’
Both of the tweets above have since been deleted, though screenshots continue to make their way around social media, and Nas has now issued an apology.
He wrote, “apologies to the trans community, I definitely handled that situation with anger instead of thinking about why it wasn’t cool. much love to you. Sorry.’
