Karl Lagerfeld was an advanced man, which makes “honoring” his designs all of the tougher for visitors at this yr’s Met Gala. Because the celebs line up for the 2023 style festivities, they’ve a slender window by which to seize pink carpet consideration for the profit — figuratively and actually — of the Metropolitan Museum of Artwork’s upcoming exhibition, Costume. Institute, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Magnificence.”[sfashionfestivitiesthey’llhaveanarrowwindowinwhichtostealredcarpetattentionforthebenefit—figurativelyandliterally—oftheMetropolitanMuseumofArt’supcomingCostumeInstituteexhibit“KarlLagerfeld:ALineofBeauty”[sfashionfestivitiesthey’llhaveanarrowwindowinwhichtostealredcarpetattentionforthebenefit—figurativelyandliterally—oftheMetropolitanMuseumofArt’supcomingCostumeInstituteexhibit“KarlLagerfeld:ALineofBeauty”
Unlike last year’s famous open-ended ‘Gilded Glamour’ theme, a dress code focused on Lagerfeld’s works should give more direction as celebrities and their stylists prepare to numb. But homages can just as quickly go horribly wrong. Either way, the world will watch – and judge. Here’s what we know so far about this year’s Met Gala.
When is the Met Gala 2023?
The annual 2023 Costume Institute Benefit — better known as the Met Gala, of course — will take place May 1, 2023 at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Live coverage of the red carpet usually starts around 6 p.m. EST, though celebrities have been known to show up (fashionably) late.
Who are this year’s co-chairs?
On January 18, the Met announced that the evening’s co-chairs will be actress and screenwriter Michaela Coel; actress Penelope Cruz; tennis star Roger Federer; pop sensation Dua Lipa; and – as always –Fashion editor-in-chief and Condé Nast Global CCO Anna Wintour. One notable note: no designers are included in this year’s list of co-chairs. What that ultimately means for the party remains to be seen.
What is the theme of the 2023 Met Gala and what does it mean?
Each year, the Met Gala theme, or rather the dress code, is tied to the Costume Institute’s Spring Exhibition. This year’s show is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty,” honoring the late German designer’s dedication to both simple, “serpentine” and “satirical” lines in his collections for Chanel, Fendi, Chlóe, Balmain, Patou and its eponymous brand from the 1950s to 2019. As such, the Met Gala dress code is simply “in honor of Karl”, with interpretation left wide open to guests.
Considering that the Met also announced that both the exhibition and the Gala will be supported by Chanel, Fendi, and Karl Lagerfeld themselves, you’ll likely see plenty of celebrities outfitted in those brands. But let’s hope we see some more creative ways to honor Lagerfeld than simply wearing his old designs.
Who’s Invited to the 2023 Met Gala and Who’s Going?
Besides the co-chairs, of course, you can expect the stalwarts: the Kardashian-Jenner clan is almost guaranteed to attend, and invites certainly go out to stars like Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, Zendaya, Selena Gomez, Rihanna, Blake Lively, and Ryan Reynolds , the Hadid sisters, the Biebers, Zoë Kravitz, Billie Eilish and – if we’re lucky – Lady Gaga and Beyoncé. But there is no word yet on who has confirmed to attend.
Can I go to the Met Gala?
A better question might be: how rich and famous are you? Even if you’ve earned enough fame to score one of the elusive invites, you’ll have to cough up several numbers to get your hands on a ticket. (Last year, tickets cost $35,000 each, and tables ran between $200,000 and $300,000, according to the New York Times.) That said, it’s easy enough to enjoy the Met Gala from a distance: The events of the event are always streamed online, and photos will appear on the web within moments of uploading.
