How huge is Steel Gear? (photograph: Konami)

The Monday Letters web page ponders the shortage of recent racing video games in 2023 as a reader turns into confused by Warner’s Suicide Squad obsession.

Snake in the grass
With new rumors of Konami perhaps planning a new Castlevania and more Metal Gear remasters/remakes, I disagree with the suggestion that they seem to be doing things backwards. Maybe Metal Gear is generally more popular than Silent Hill, but I wouldn’t say it was a household name or anything.

At least Silent Hill got a few movies, one of which was actually pretty good, but I don’t think anyone who isn’t a gamer has had a chance to hear about Metal Gear elsewhere. It’s not like any of the games have been huge hits, either. They’ve been pretty big, but not compared to the real top sellers. If they were Konami, Hideo Kojima wouldn’t be so keen on them.

I’m not trying to attack the series, I’ve played a few of them and think they’re good enough, but some people like to think of them as the equivalent of Call Of Duty or Assassin’s Creed or something, and they really aren’t. Metal Gear is a fairly successful series that basically cannot continue without its original creator. I can understand why Konami would pass it by in favor of others when making new games.

Long ago
Totally agree with the Reader’s Feature on the Suicide Squad. It looks terrible on every level. It doesn’t even seem to have anything to do with the comics aside from the story. This isn’t the kind of gameplay you’d expect for any of these characters, and they could easily be swapped out for something unrelated to comics and it wouldn’t make any difference.

What gets me is that Warner has apparently been trying to get this game made since 2010. That’s not a rumor, they were really talking about it at the time. There was even a tease of it in Batman: Arkham Origins, back in 2013. Between this and the two movies, what’s the obsession with an obscure comic book about a bunch of villains. And why, when you finally make the game, does it have nothing to do with the actual premise?

Sporting opportunity
While I agree that last week’s state of play wasn’t great, I have to leave it to Capcom because it has by far the two best things going for it. Resident Evil 4 looks fantastic, but the one that surprised me is Street Fighter 6. While I’m very homesick for Street Fighter 2, I’ve been putting off the sequels, especially 5, due to the emphasis on competition and esports.

I’ve seen less of that so far though and with all the talk about story mode I’m getting really excited about it. I also like the graphics, which seem to be a really good compromise between cartoony and realistic, while still being distinctive in their own right.

I really hope Capcom realizes that the whole esports thing puts people off as much as it attracts them, and for me the less I hear about it the more interested I will be.

Linear media
Interesting attempt to say that the video game version of The Last Of Us is more effective because it’s interactive, but I’m not buying it. The action part of it is interactive, but nothing else is. The Reader’s Feature talks about being an “active participant” and how “our moral responses to the decisions we make in that digital, vicarious life make us think about and learn from our choices,” but there are no decisions that the game should be taken ? That is the main argument against.

The entire finale revolves around a decision that is beyond your control and at no other point in the game can you change even a small part of it. You can’t choose to kill people, you kill them or you kill them and that’s it.

It’s not me saying The Last Of Us is a bad game – I enjoyed it – but the argument that it’s better than the show makes no sense. The show is clearly much better at telling a story and presenting the characters and I feel much more invested in them than I do in the game simply because they seem more realistic and three-dimensional.

New problem
So it’s not just Sony being weird about game announcements, is it? Has Mortal Kombat 12 now been announced, no less for this year, during boring business meetings? With not even a logo to go by? That must be a mistake I think, they must have thought it was already revealed, but I hope we get a proper reveal soon.

I’m curious to see what they’ll do with the game though, as the series now seems to have reached a dead end through no fault of their own, and I really don’t know what else they can do with it. Most fighting games have that problem, but with Mortal Kombat 12 I’m having a hard time thinking of anything new they could do.

Second hand opinion
This is going to be a controversial post. But it’s absolutely true. Persona 5 Royal is indeed the best Japanese role-playing game of all time. Anyone can list Final Fantasy 7 or the other titles as worthy contenders, but Atlus’ masterpiece is something special. After all, how many titles can whip up a story of more than 100 hours without it becoming repetitive, dragging or tedious?

It’s absolutely brilliantly written, the city of Tokyo is represented phenomenally, it even shows it off in such a way that Ghostwire: Tokyo wishes it had. Joker serves as a memorable protagonist and the characters are portrayed superbly. With the acclaim it’s received and the fanbase continuing to sing its praises, one can only wonder why Atlus hasn’t announced Persona 6?

It would become an instant box office sensation, but if we can live in a time when Silent Hill has resurfaced, through multiple titles and a movie, anything is possible. I still have to play the game too, I’m buying it on the Nintendo Switch. Thought I’d throw in a curveball, as a final note. But it is absolutely certain. Persona 5 is brilliant.

GC: That’s not a controversial opinion, except… you didn’t play it? Then how do you know how good it is or whether Joker is memorable? There was also eight years between Persona 4 and 5, so Persona 6 won’t be overdue until next year.

Scheduled match
Looking at your video game release schedule, and considering all the recent teasers and announcements, something strikes me and that is that there are absolutely no racing games being teased or scheduled for release this year and I’m actually quite disappointed to see it!

I’m hoping for a little Inbox magic and some announcements of new racing games, arcade or sim – right now I’m taking whatever I can get my hands on!

GC: They may not have release dates and could easily slip into 2024, but Forza Motorsport, Test Drive Unlimited: Solar Crown, and The Crew Motorfest should all be out this year. There’s also Codemasters’ first WRC game and, presumably, F1 23.

Why indeed?
After reviewing the most recent state of play, I can’t say I’m impressed with what was shown. I do not intend to buy PlayStation VR2; I got PlayStation VR a few years after launch, in one of the good Black Friday bundles, but the novelty soon wore off. None of the PlayStation VR2 games I’ve seen are up my alley – most of those announced yesterday seemed to be shooters – which is good, because I can’t justify spending £550 on new hardware anyway and a game.

Baldur’s Gate 3’s late August release date was a pleasant surprise, as I thought we might be waiting a while for a console release after it leaves Early Access on PC. I still have Divinity: Original Sin 2 in my backlog to play first…

I’m curious what others thought of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. From the gameplay shown, it’s not the follow up to the Arkham series I wanted. The Arkham series is probably my favorite game series ever and Suicide Squad looks like it could have come from a different developer entirely.

Why put the game in a superhero universe if the player is powerless and spends all his time shooting guns? The visuals on display seem reminiscent of Gotham Knights, with its focus on co-op, character upgrades and customization, which isn’t a comparison that gives me much hope for the game. I’m willing to wait for reviews before passing judgement, but first impressions suggest I’ll miss it.

Inbox is also running
Nintendo sent me an email earlier in February saying that Bayonetta 1 would be released physically for the Switch in February. I was going to get myself a copy, it hasn’t appeared in stock yet and there’s only two days left in February, so not long to wait.

At first I thought there was no chance that most games would come out with a VR mode, because Sony would have already announced that. Then I remembered the work they’d done marketing PSVR2 so far…
