A foul flip of occasions (Photograph: Sony)

The Friday Letters web page flips via the ashes of one other disappointing state of affairs, as one reader needs Sony would purchase Metallic Gear.

When love is gone
In the words of Krusty the Clown, what the hell was that? I actually took some time to review the state of play last night and my goodness, what a complete non-event. Five cheap-looking VR games that underscore GC’s point that Sony isn’t marketing the headset properly, a bunch of games we already knew, and then 20 minutes of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, which looked awful.

Perhaps not exactly terrible, but it looked like a mid-range PS4 game from eight years ago, not the work of an acclaimed developer who has been working on the game for so long. I especially like how they have the worst of both worlds: four street-level villains with no powers, flying across the screen like Superman all the time, using ridiculously overpowered weapons, even though one of them is *checks notes* Captain Boomerang.

I don’t know what’s been happening with Sony lately. God Of War Ragnarök was good, but everything else just seems so half-hearted and unexciting. It’s like Sony is trapped in a loveless marriage and they can barely bring themselves to get out of bed in the morning. If they don’t want to make and sell video games anymore, I know a few global mega-corps they’d love to buy out and put out of their misery.

Future bargain
Ah… is it just me or was that state of affairs actually pretty bad. People don’t “win” E3 anymore, but in the battle for the winter shows, Sony came last at a mile (and funnily enough, Nintendo took home the best).

The whole thing seems so low energy and completely lacking in hype. I don’t see it as anything other than harming Sony. If Warner wanted to do a Suicide Squad preview event, they should have done it themselves and not convinced Sony to make them their centerpiece. Mainly because the game looks horrible.

I can only imagine how concerned Rocksteady got when everyone turned against microtransactions and Avengers flopped, but they should have scrapped the entire game or made it into a story game or something because it looked really bad. I could pick it up for a tenth of the price on Black Friday, though, because that’s so clearly the future it’s looking at.

Glass half full
Trying to be positive about this, but at least the Resident Evil 4 remake looked good in the state of play? Seriously, it looked absolutely perfect, with great graphics, hopefully good gameplay (GC said it was good), and cheesy dialogue. I am 100% sold.

It’s not my cup of tea but Street Fighter 6 looked good too so at least we can say Capcom had a good night. The rest right? Maybe Sony shouldn’t have a new showcase after all if they didn’t have anything to show. Especially after wasting so much time on Suicide Squad, which really didn’t look good at all.

wanted list
Great to see GC so excited about the PlayStation VR2 after the disappointing launch games. I agree that it’s odd that Sony isn’t emphasizing things like Gran Turismo 7 and Resident Evil, rather than all those other random indie games I’ve never heard of. It sounds like they’re better tech demos for the headset than Horizon Call Of The Mountain and they’re actual games too.

I still find it odd that the game turned into a climbing sim, it seems so unexciting for what should have been the big PlayStation VR2 exclusive. No idea that should have come from the conference room. (Why not let the robots control you instead? That would have been a cool twist on the usual gameplay, and you could have made it in first person too.)

I can’t pretend I’m going to buy a PlayStation VR2 right now, but it’s definitely on my wanted list right now. I’ll see what else Sony announces in the future.

Maybe next time
I feel like I’ve been reading rumors about Metal Gear Solid remasters and collections for almost a decade, ever since Hideo Kojima’s departure, I think, and still we don’t have an announcement. I can believe that Konami keeps changing its mind about what it wants to do, but I really don’t think most fans would have any problem with a remake as long as it stays close to the original.

New games, sure, no one will care without Kojima, but making it easy to play new, beautiful versions of the original classics? No one is going to complain about that. If they get a big reveal at E3, fine, but I’m no more confident than the dozens of times it’s been rumored before.

At best, the IP would still have been sold to Sony (and Castlevania to Nintendo). If they don’t want to or can’t do the work themselves, they should have someone take over who can take it over.

Physical obstacle
I wonder if the wonderful folks at the Inbox and Underbox could help with an Xbox upgrade question.

My 15-year-old has an Xbox One and wants to be part of the current generation. The Xbox Series S is cheaper but digital only and he owns a lot of physical games for his Xbox One, so does that mean he has to buy the Xbox Series X to play them? I know, of course, he can’t put a disc in a console that doesn’t have a disc drive, but could he use his current external hard drive, which has his games currently stored on it, plug into the new console and play the games already there through that route are saved?

I don’t have an Xbox so I didn’t help him a lot. I’ve been trying to find some information online and if he had bought his games digitally he could have downloaded them all again but since they are physical copies it seems he would have to buy the Xbox Series X in order to play them. He wants to buy this with any Christmas money he has left over, but robbers here should top it up if he needs an Xbox Series X.

Thanks in advance for any help.

GC: Digital games work fine, but as far as we know there’s no way to get discs to work.

Short delay
I reported in a letter on Wednesday that my PlayStation VR2 hadn’t shipped, so probably had to wait a few days. Turns out Sony’s site was just a little slow to update.

I got an email at 11am on Wednesday – launch day – saying it had shipped and then less than two hours later there was a knock on the door with my PlayStation VR2, have a nice day. Seems like this was the same for a few people.

Surprise delivery
So, unbeknownst to me, my family all joined in on Christmas and secretly ordered a PlayStation VR2, which arrived yesterday. Initially I was skeptical about their purchase as the lineup was average. I agree that Horizon Call Of The Mountain is OK and nothing more.

Gran Turismo 7, however, is a complete revelation. GT Sport on the original PlayStation VR made me feel sick in the first round, but WipEout was fine with me, so I was a little hesitant to get into it, but I haven’t had any issues with motion sickness whatsoever. Racing around the Tokyo Express track at night in an F1 car is probably the most fun I’ve had in a racing game since Burnout 3. The physicality of the opponent cars means you’re on guard by default, so driving feels super intense, but ripping past them on a straight with a screaming engine is absolutely fantastic.

But to start Resident Evil, but since I haven’t played the original, I expect I’ll have to change my slacks at some point. Lady Dimitrescu is getting huge (no pun intended). Hopefully Resident Evil 4 will also be fully playable in VR. I have been very pleasantly surprised by the new headset so far.

Now back to the Nürburgring.

GC: A VR mode for Resident Evil 4 was announced on Wednesday.

Inbox is also running
Everyone has been trying to buy Sons Of The Forest on Steam at the same time for the past two hours. I still haven’t managed to buy it. I will keep trying and crashing Steam.

RE: Hot Topic Idea. What about the game you liked the most that had the worst review score? If it’s been done before, it’s fine. Currently playing Titan Quest. It’s in the 1970s on Metacritic, but I’m looking forward to it.

GC: We’ve done it before, but we’re sure it will happen again sooner or later.

Hot topic this week
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was inspired by reader Crombie, who asks are you spending less on video games now than you did before and during the pandemic?

Value for money has been much discussed lately, but has your spending habits changed since the end of the pandemic and the start of the current economic crisis? Do you generally spend less on games and has that led to you playing them less – or has that not changed?

Do you currently have a set budget for what you want to spend on games and how does that account for new hardware purchases and things like microtransactions?
